Afya Elimu beneficiaries, Human Resources for Health (HRH) Kenya Mechanism and HELB staff participated in the 15th edition of the Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) marathon held in Nairobi on 26 November 2017. AEF beneficiaries from KMTC, Nairobi braved the chilly morning weather to participate in the marathon. Seeing is Believing is Standard Chartered Bank‘s global initiative aimed at tackling avoidable blindness and visual impairment. The bank collaborates with International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and leading eye care organizations and raises funds for investment in eye care projects that have long-term impact in areas of high need. Since launching the program globally in 2003, Standard Chartered has contributed to over 2.9 million cataract operations and surgical interventions, and treated 1.9 million people for river blindness. Standard Chartered has also contributed KES 15 million to the Afya Elimu Fund supporting needy students undertaking medical courses in eye care treatment.

Meet Yvette Amiany,

“I always wanted to study Optometry as my mother got cataracts and we did not have enough money to seek medical care”

Yvette Amiany is a KMTC, Nairobi third year student studying Optometry. She was among the AEF beneficiaries that took part in the the Standard Chartered Marathon. As an AEF beneficiary she is grateful to Standard Chartered for supporting her education as well as providing cataract operations and surgical interventions so that under priveledged persons like her mother can receive treatment.
